We stayed in Picton for a little over a month and had a wonderful
time.  As Picton has only about 3,000 residents, you get a warm and
welcoming small-town feel.  But since it is the major South Island
port for the Interislander Ferry, many tourists and travelers make
their way through the city.  This traffic brings services above and
beyond what you would expect in such a small town.  There are great
restaurants and bars, boitique shops with everything from art to
clothing, a large grocery store, salons, jewelers, and a bustling
hotel/B&B/hostel scene.  You really do get the best of both worlds.
You are very easily connected to the rest of the island with the
InterCity bus system, and there are plenty of rental car agencies as
well.  And Picton, in and of itself, is a great outdoor destination,
with loads of trails for tramping, boating and kayaking opportunities,
fishing, and a great little minigolf course.  We specifically enjoyed
the long tramp to “The Snout”, our weekly Thursday afternoon game of
mini-golf, and pretty much everything we ate at the local restaurants!
We highly recommend Picton as a waypoint in your South Island
travels, but don’t move on too quickly…stay and enjoy the great
people and places this town has to offer!

I don’t know who should receive this, but my husband and I would like
to especially thank the women who greeted our ship, the Volendam, (in
early February) with flowers. It was such a gracious gesture and made
us feel welcome in your beautiful city. We enjoyed walking about, our
meals, your talking loo, and the park, as well as the shops.
