About Broadway Motel – Accommodation In Picton

The Broadway Motel is a family owned business with a very clear vision of providing quality accommodation and service to people from New Zealand and all over the world, in a friendly family environment. When you stay with us, we will do our utmost to ensure you get every opportunity to enjoy all the bounties that Marlborough has to offer and have a enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Both of us are (Donna & Henry) are true West Coasters, being born and bred on the Coast, spending the majority of our lives in Hokitika. After being made redundant we moved to Christchurch for five years before buying the Broadway Motel Business. We have three lovely daughters, Nikki (married to Brian), Haley (married to Steve) and Louise. The other members of our family include: our two grandsons (Hunter & Rhylee) and we also have a cat name Lillian – who loves attention. So when you come and stay at the Broadway Motel, you can expect to be welcomed by at least one member of the family with some true friendly West Coast hospitality.

When we first envisioned owning a motel over 30 years ago, our goal was always to provide a future for our children, particularly in times of adversity and to give them the opportunity to work in their own business. It has taken a long time to realise this dream, with Haley & Steve now finally managing the Broadway Motel.

Looking after our environment is a very important part of our business. We achieve this by reducing our waste, conserving our resources and recycling wherever possible, so that we pass on an unpolluted natural resource for all our children to enjoy. We are a family that enjoys the outdoors and are more than willing to pass on our personal experiences to all our guests, on what Marlborough has to offer.

One thing that we all pride ourselves on, is our personal friendly service, no matter who in the family meets you when you check-in. We are happy to organise activities for you while you are staying here in Picton, such as: a wine tour, dolphin watching or swimming, cruising or walking in the Sounds, guided walks, canoeing, a ferry trip across the Cook Strait or anything else you may like to do.

So why not come and stay at the Broadway Motel and let us look after you while you are in our playground.

We look forward to meeting you soon,

- Henry & Donna Kersten, Haley & Steve Brabant

The word Sauvignon is a derivative from the French word Sauvage meaning wild or savage and of course the word blanc is the French word for white. The wild or savage white wine grape has been named as such for a reason.

Genetically, Sauvignon Blanc shares a parental role with Cabernet Franc bringing to the world the modern king of vines, Cabernet Sauvignon. A small and powerful family of time honoured varieties each with wild and strong characters that when grown and managed well produce some of the worlds formidable, finest and memorable wines.

Sauvignon Blanc has also been described as a “Chameleon” of the vine world. Its sheer tenacity allows it’s fruit to be made as the unctuously sweet and “sticky” wines of Sauternes, the dry flinty limestone grown wines of Poulliy-Fume and the powerful tropical new world delights from Marlborough.

But it is a narrow banded Chameleon. For the Sauvignon Blanc grape to have the excitement that has brought it fame there are a few things that need to be.

Stony, well drained soils are a start. The sun must be abundant and the air cooled with breezy winds. Dry, cool and sunny seasons make good vintages for Sauvignon Blanc. These conditions allow for the tantalising fresh acidity that livens Sauvignon Blanc to its mouth-watering best.

The Sauvignon Blanc vine is immensely vigorous. Lower fertility stony gravels of the new world and the limestone soils of the old, harness the vigour and grow the most exciting Sauvignon Blanc. Careful vineyard selection and diligent vine management is essential to yield balanced fruit. Too much crop and the grapes will have dilute characters and fail to ripen beyond an uninteresting grassy, capsicum greenness. Too little crop and the risk increases of over ripening, results in grapes with less vibrant acidity and dulls the natural varietal character. The vine “buds” late in the season, and a well balanced crop will riper earlier than other varieties.

Sauvignon Blanc grapes are thin skinned making them prone to Botrytis cinerea or noble rot that, while attractive with other varieties and styles, detracts from the flavours of dry Sauvignon Blanc. To combat botrytis with good viticulture, some of the vines leaves are removed around the fruit zone allowing sunshine and air flow to the bunches.

Most new world Sauvignon Blanc is machine harvested. This allows picking at optimum ripeness and with the desired flavours. Depending on a vineyard’s altitude, aspect, soil structure and crop level, the balance of ripeness and flavour can happen over a three to four week period. The window of opportunity to harvest at the delicate balance of “optimum ripeness and flavour” is small with Sauvignon Blanc. The early harvest of a balanced yielding vineyard will produce the grapes for the best wine of the season.

Hand harvesting is chosen for the vineyards growing for Fairbourne. The difference between hand harvested Sauvignon Blanc and that harvested by machine is monumental. Flavour and palate texture from hand harvested Sauvignon Blanc is far more expressive and the wine has greater length. Sauvignon Blanc grapes have very “wild / savage” characters. Like most fruits, the strongest flavours are in the skin. Hand harvesting lessens juice contact with the more aggressive and phenolic characters of crushed skins, bunch stalks and petioles. Therefore, hand harvested grapes can produce a more focussed aroma spectrum and are more likely to express the nuances of the vineyard with a clear and powerful varietal expression.

Our decision to hand harvest the chosen Fairbourne vineyards comes from our desire to evolve the perception of the Marlborough style. To make a world class dry white wine with Sauvignon Blanc. A wine more age worthy, with a finer texture, and lithe like the ballerina with grace, strength balance and elegance.

Viticulture:

The grapes for Fairbourne are grown on north facing hillside vineyards. Vines are pruned to two canes and vertical shoots. Most vine management is completed by hand. Extra care is taken with shoot thinning to achieve spatial uniformity to encourage even bunch development. Leaf plucking is performed to control the light and air providing an ideal environment to ripen the grapes. The hillside presents the vines for optimal sun exposure allowing full and earlier ripening.

Winemaking:

The Fairbourne grapes are hand harvested to retain elegant and distinctive characters. The grape flavours are of ripe citrus and pineapple framed with gravelly and mineral nuances from its soils.

The grapes are fermented as site batches with selected yeast strains to reveal individual fruit expressions. The juice is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks over a four week period, then allowed to rest on fine yeast lees for 4 months. The extended fine lees contact increases palate depth and texture to the final wine.

A small portion of Fairbourne wine is matured for a year in mature French oak adding a structural dimension to the wine. Fairbourne is a selected blend of the finished wines creating a pure and expressive style of Sauvignon Blanc that we consider uniquely superior with its fine and lengthy flavours. Fairbourne shares the characteristics of the vineyard with regional and varietal expression and is appreciated by consumers of fine wine.

Two Tails is a wine grown to project the intensity and widely recognised characters of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is a style made with respect to the grape and it’s Southern Valley origins. Typically drier than most of its peers and with a full and generous palate structure. As a result Two Tails pairs well with a wider range of cuisine. Two Tails is also made in limited quantities and a popular choice for the independent route to market.

Dozens of playful seal pups have taken to splashing about in a waterfall pool north of Kaikoura, delighting hundreds of people with their boisterous antics.

But as visitor numbers have grown at the Marlborough site, the Department of Conservation (DOC) is considering measures to keep the crowds at bay.

The pups from the Ohau Point fur seal colony, about 22km north of Kaikoura, frolic up the nearby Ohau stream to play at the base of a 30-metre waterfall and bask in the sun.

DOC South Marlborough biodiversity manager Phil Bradfield said the number of pups born at the colony had nearly tripled in recent years, from 600 in 2005 to 1500 last year.

“As seal numbers have grown, this kind of phenomenon is increasing,” he told NZPA.

“There are often probably in the region of 100 to 200 up the stream and in the pool.”

The pups stayed close to where they were born for the first few months of their life, but began to wander further afield as they grew older.

Many had taken to heading up the stream while their mothers were out at sea for up to two days at a time, feeding to produce a very rich milk for the pups.

The pups were learning to interact socially and developing their coordination as they splashed about in the stream and the pool, Mr Bradfield said.

“Like all young animals, they’re full of the joys of life,” he said.

“They’re exploring and playing with their peers and generally learning about the world around them.”

The playful seals were attracting an increasing number of visitors as word of mouth spread, with about 5000 people making the three-minute walk from State Highway 1 to the waterfall every month.

DOC was monitoring the situation as the site’s popularity increased.

“We’re discussing whether we need to put a low-key barrier there maybe…but we’re a wee way from that yet.”

Mr Bradfield warned visitors that the pups had sharp teeth and were protected under the Marine Mammals Act.

“Sure, they look very cute, but we would urge people not to get to close to them.”

There had been no incidents to date.

“The majority of people who go there are really appreciating the experience, they’re very respectful of the seals and as a result they’re having a fantastic experience,” he said.

“As long as people respect them and don’t get too close, the interaction is a fantastic one to experience.”

The sunny town of Blenheim is an ideal base for those who want to explore the local wine and food culture. Bike around the vineyards or catch a tour.

Blenheim is situated in the heart of wine-growing Marlborough. It is one of the sunniest towns in New Zealand, with an estimated average of 2,438 hours of sunshine a year. Mountains frame the area and trap the summer heat (temperatures over 30°C are quite normal in February and March). In and around Blenheim you’ll find a pleasing selection of cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, artisan food outlets and golf courses. There are more than 20 wineries within driving distance of the town, and most of them welcome visitors for sampling sessions and cellar door sales. Character accommodation is a Blenheim speciality.
